Supply Chain Alliance Supports Second Harvest Food Bank
Legacy Foodservice Alliance, of Richmond, VA, collaborated with Supplier Members to make a food contribution to Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida at Legacy’s semi-annual Marketplace in Orlando. The Marketplace is Legacy’s buying and business conference that takes place in the Spring and Fall of each year.
Callie Redford, VP Member Development stated, “Hunger is a nationwide concern, affecting people at every stage of life. Our business is foodservice, so it is only logical for us to partner with a great cause that is doing real work to help their community.”
Legacy Supplier Members donated 1,700+ pounds of food, choosing to make sure those items went to those in need, and not to the landfill. “The Members of Legacy Foodservice Alliance were happy to participate in the good utilization of products. Food bank donations are now a staple of all Legacy Marketplaces,” Redford added.
Second Harvest Food Bank is driven to close the gap of unmet need in Central Florida in a variety of effective ways. Their mission is to create hope and nourish lives through a powerful hunger relief network, while multiplying the generosity of a caring community. They are a private, nonprofit organization that collects, stores and distributes donated food to more than 550 feeding partners in six Central Florida counties. Last year, with the help of numerous donors, volunteers and a caring, committed community, the food bank distributed nearly 63 million meals to partner programs such as food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, senior centers, day care centers and Kids Cafes.
Second Harvest also transforms dozens of lives directly every year. Economically challenged adults who graduate from our 16-week culinary training program are placed in ‘better than minimum wage’ jobs that set them and their families on a path to self-sustainability. Yet another important activity helps connect people who are eligible to receive SNAP food assistance benefits with the resources they need to access the program and get help.
